Packing Like a Pro: A Room-by-Room Guide from Our Crews

The techniques our professional packers use every day - dishes that survive, boxes that lift safely, and labels that make unpacking easy.
The golden rules
Heavy items in small boxes, light items in big ones. Every box gets paper on the bottom, no empty space inside, and a label with room + contents on the side (not the top - you can't read tops in a stack).
Kitchen: where damage happens
Plates travel vertically like records, never flat. Wrap each glass individually and fill them with crumpled paper. Use dish barrels (double-walled boxes) - this is the one room where cheap boxes cost you.
Bedrooms & closets
Leave clothes in dresser drawers for local carries, but box them for long-distance. Wardrobe boxes keep hanging clothes wrinkle-free - one box holds about two feet of closet rod.
Living room: screens and art
TVs travel in TV cartons with corner protection - original boxes if you kept them. Mirrors and framed art get an X of painter's tape across the glass, then corner protectors and a mirror carton.
Garage & the 'problem items'
Drain fuel from anything with an engine. Tape lids on anything liquid, then bag it anyway. Paints, propane, and aerosols can't go on the truck - plan to give them away or dispose properly.

Rough rule: 10-15 boxes per room, plus specialty cartons for wardrobe, dishes, and TVs. A 2-bedroom home commonly uses 60-80 boxes.
Grocery-store boxes are free but inconsistent and often too weak for long-distance stacking. For anything fragile, purpose-made double-walled boxes are worth it - we include all materials with our packing service.
Documents, jewelry, medications, cash, and anything irreplaceable travel with you. Hazardous items (fuel, propane, aerosols, paint) can't be transported at all.
